Friends list

Hi together,
I had a suggestion for this site. What do you think about a friends list? You can add users to your friends list and if the user you added logs in or logs out, you'll be informed by a message.

Greetings,
janagirl!

Hi, Jana. I think this has been suggested before, at least the friends list part of it. People have wanted something along the lines of what Facebook offers. I am not
sure of why this has not been done, so perhaps one of the other CL's could chime in here?

As far as getting a message notifying you when someone logs in or out, we do have that feature already. It is called person watch. If you're sitting on the Zone's main page, there is a link that says, "Person watch." Click on that, and you have the option to add people to your watched list, by typing in their user name or ID number. You will receive an email whenever they log into the site, except if they log in invisibly. But so long as they are visible, you will receive that email. Hope that helps a little.

we already have a feature like this called person watch. Do bear in mind though that anyone who is being "watched" has the ability to ignore that person's watch request if they don't want others notified of when they log in.

As for a friends list, I'm not entirely sure what purpose this serves? This isn't facebook - it's a public community where you can chat publically to everyone or privately to a user of your choosing. So essentially you can choose who you talk to if you don't send public qn's.

However, person watch is only available to premium members, I believe. Although, anyone can see who is watching them.

Well, this isn't like Facebook. The concept is totally different, so why bother with a Friends list? That's what Facebook's for?

I guess the only thing I could say is that personally, I think person watch should be available to standard members as well, but oh well. You can't have everything. that would be kind of like having a friends list on the zone.

lol.

the only idea i ever liked was getting notified of log ins and log outs with publics off.

for example, you don't wanna keep scrolling down the page if you're trying to play anagrams etc.

that could be for a friends list, so you still no they are around, even if your messages are turned off

Stockerish is not a word.

I'm with Donkey. Person watch is creepy. A friend's list would be cool, but it's been shut down several times because of fear of the Zone being like a popularity contest. And if you think that Facebook is the place to go for all that, think again. Even the mobile site is getting screwed up and a lot of us are having major issues with it. Anyway, end of This is how I personally keep track of a lot om my friends from high school and my distant relatives (which is pretty much all of them). rant.

totally agreed about person watch. I just figured that would be the closest existing feature to a friends list.

I guess I miss the whole 'popularity contest' argument: if there are people still young and fool enough to want to do that fine, let 'em. that doesn't deny the potential benefits to a feature.
This is more an old message board service than it is a true social network like Facebook, etc. It's a bit more like forums.pipes.org or something similar, selectrive group, message boards, etc.
I've never heard of a software feature argued against on such thin ground as someone might 'miss-use?' it to make believe something. In that case, we'd have to eliminate a lot on the net, I guess.
But, just for fun, how about a Fiends' list instead.

Lol Leo! Fiends list indeed. Nice...

I'm not as against the idea as I used to be, as of course not everyone is going to be friends ith everyone else. Several changes would need to be made for this to have much meaning though, like profile controls, the friend approval code, etc. So it's not a dead simple feature to implement. It could happen someday however there's probably more pressing issues.
